Chowki is a 4 legged stool that originated in Rajasthan, a north western Indian state. In the olden days, the family would congregate around the Chowki for meals.  Nowadays, the Chowki is used for various purposes.  These Chowkis have been made using Babool wood. Given the intricate work involved, it takes an artisan 20-30 days to complete the Chowki. At first, paper mache dough is formed into various shapes and stuck on the Chowki. Thereafter, a paste of primer and the base color is applied . Once that is done, a ceramic colors cone is used to decorate the Chowki. Glazed stones are then placed in the appropriate places which brings the Chowki to life.  Thereafter, varnish is applied which lends shine & strength to the Chowki. In the end, the Chowki is framed.  SInce Rajasthan is a desert state and has a harsh life, Rajasthanis filled their life with color. Therefore, you will see that the Chowkis are bright in color. Even the legs are decorated with bright stones and colors.
